Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) is celebrating a historic sporting achievement this week as the Under 15s Girls’ cricket team has advanced to the final 16 of the prestigious Cricket Paper National Schools Cup.

In a dramatic contest hosted by Ardingly yesterday (Monday 8 June 2026), the BACA side demonstrated remarkable resilience. Despite challenging, wet and slippery conditions, the team held their nerve after rain delay forced the match into a shortened 10-over format.

Ardingly batted first, posting a competitive total of 70 runs. However, the BACA bowling attack was relentless, claiming seven wickets in just 10 overs. The team's youth shone through in these pivotal moments; Year 7 student Khadija secured the first wicket with a brilliant, stretched one-handed leaping catch, while fellow Year 7 student Anila used cat-like reflexes to snag a catch whilst bowling.

The run chase saw equally impressive performances from the BACA batters. Year 9 student Lucy and Year 8 student Cora anchored the innings, with Lucy producing the highlight of the match by smashing a magnificent six that nearly reached the road. BACA showcased superior tactical discipline, losing only one wicket before surpassing the target in the final over to secure a well-deserved victory.

This triumph marks the first time any BACA team has progressed this far in a national competition. BACA now stands as the only school in Sussex and the only traditional state school remaining in the tournament.

The success of the squad is a testament to the expert stewardship of world-cup winning coach Mark Robinson, OBE and Assistant BACA Lead Coach Jordan Shaw, both of whom have been instrumental in developing the students' skills and competitive spirit.  As a former student of the Aldridge Cricket Academy at BACA, Jordan Shaw serves as a fantastic role model, demonstrating the high-calibre pathway available to our young cricketers.

Being the final traditional state school remaining in the competition is a huge honour, and we look forward to representing Brighton and the non-selective state sector with pride in the next round.”
