BACA Wins the ‘Outstanding’ Skilled Teacher Award at the Rainbow Flag Awards, 2018
BACA was awarded the Skilled Teacher Award due to the time and care that has been taken to ensure that tools and literature are available to all teaching and support staff. A specific group of staff members have been trained in the skilled teacher training and a Trans Inclusion Tools Kit will now be given to new staff joining the Academy.
There are visual markers around the Academy which highlight the school’s commitment to LGBT inclusion. The Rainbow Flag assessor from the Allsorts Youth Project commented, “First gender free changing rooms I have come across. BACA is setting a bar that other schools should be aiming for.”
BACA's students feel that they can confidently approach knowledgeable staff about LGBT issues. Students also have observed other young people being disciplined for HBT bullying, which is essential for developing a culture of acceptance and inclusion.
The Rainbow Flag Award is a quality assurance framework for all educational institutions, focusing on LGBT+, (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, plus other related identities), inclusion and visibility. The Award encourages a holistic approach to LGBT+ inclusion, as well as developing strategies to combat homophobic, biphobic and transphobic, (HBT), bullying.
BACA’s dedication to achieving the Rainbow Flag Award is a commitment to improve the lives of all the young people that the Academy works with, as well as the LGBT+ young people in our care, those from LGBT+ families, and LGBT+ staff members.
Through a process of self-assessment and ongoing monitoring and feedback, schools and colleges are offered a variety of interventions, helping them meet set standards in each of the following areas:
- Skilled teacher
- Supportive governors and parents
- Effective policies
- Inclusive curriculum
- Pastoral support
- Pupil voice
BACA is celebrating Diversity Week from Monday 2 July till Friday 6 July, during which students will have LGBT+ themed lessons. Friday, 6 July, will be BACA Pride Day on which we will have multiple activities like a photo booth, a disco, film screening, and a non uniform day where students will donate money that will go towards the Allsorts Youth Project that supports multiple young people at BACA.
