BACA Poet's Feature in BBC Film!
Back in February, we wrote about a fantastic opportunity given to a group of Year 10 BACA Scholars in partnership with Brighton-based young writers charity, Little Green Pig. Little Green Pig believe in the right to write, and work with young people in Sussex to help them build confidence, communication and literacy skills through self-expression.
The project took place over the course of the academic year and followed the theme ‘Place’, which was influenced by poet Dylan Thomas’ radio play ‘Under the Milkwood’ about his childhood home in Wales.
Each of our students wrote a poem about a place that was important to them, supported by writing mentors who gave advice with the crafting and vocabulary of their pieces. One student particularly enjoyed the opportunity to walk around her local neighbourhood for inspiration, saying that she viewed Moulsecoomb ‘with a fresh pair of eyes’ for her writing. In the final workshop, students recorded themselves reading their poetry and were given expert guidance on how to use their voices to create impact during their readings.
The project was such a success that the students were invited to BBC Radio Sussex studios to talk about the experience of the writing process and the poetry project.
You can see the final BBC film, featuring the students’ final poems, alongside images of the places they wrote about and their time in the workshops below. Well-done to our students who took part and wrote some amazing poetry as part of this project!
